In the prime of my youth as many young boys my age did we played video games after school instead of going outside and playing sports with the other boys in the neighborhood. I know the Sony Playstation controller like a Michael Bay knows explosions. Resident Evil was usually the game of choice when I was younger so naturally I was stoked when Hollywood decided to green light Resident Evil the Movie. I did not know this franchise was going to fall flat on its face after the second one. I have seen every Resident Evil movie and all 3 before Afterlife were tolerable. Resident Evil: Afterlife on the other hand was a terrible movie that I will probably watch again in a couple of years when it’s on The CW movie of the week.
The only reason why I decided to give Resident Evil: Afterlife a chance in the first place is because they kept my girl Milla Jovovich on board and not only is she a badass on the silver screen she also easy on the eyes. This movie also gave me an added bonus to watch this movie because they kept Ali Larter who plays Claire from Resident Evil: Extinction. It always drives me insane when a movie franchise decides to replace a person and keep the same character. The best example of this that drives me totally insane is in the Back to the Future movies when they replace Marty’s girlfriend, Jennifer from Claudia Wells to Elisabeth Shue. This idea could work if there was a time period in between part 1 and part 2, but number 2 literally started right where 1 left off. The point is this; Resident Evil did a good job on casting the two main characters back to make a terrible movie.
Resident Evil: Afterlife starts off with Alice (Milla Jovovich) kicking some ass and taking out about 100 guards in a couple of seconds. Usually I like these types of things because the stunts are so cool and the Resident Evil franchise really pulls it off. This movie must not have had the same technology as the others because when Alice does a front flip it looks like she is on a string and the sting flips her around. Alice just does a straight flip with her legs perfectly straight and her arms at her sides. The stunts looks totally awkward at points and I was embarrasses for the people who thought the stunts looked like real movie stunts. You can tell that this movie was made for 3D as well because Alice would shoot guards and the screen would go super slow-mo and show the bullets penetrate the heads of the bad guys and the bullet would still be going forward as if it was about to hit you if you had 3D glasses on. Netflix has this movie as 97 minutes and I feel this movie could have been cut down to 80 minutes because I am pretty sure there was about 17 minutes of slow-mo of Alice jumping around and shooting zombies.
After all of the ass kicking Alice finally meets the main bad guy and he gets the best of her this time and they both move on with the rest of the movie until the end. Oh yea, I forgot to mention he stabs her with a syringe that cures her and makes her human. Although the rest of the movie she is doing crazy things like jumping 15 feet in the air and jump kicking zombies. Out of all things that pissed me off during this movie was her being turned human without losing her power and speed. She lost some powers, but I could not tell when the fight scenes were going on. Did the director forget that part in the script of was she just a badass human to begin with?
Alice is trying to find survivors because she still has hope for some reason and oh what a shock she finds a group of survivors and who would have guessed that the group was a bunch of people who did not exactly get along. There was the strong black guy who was the leader, the annoying prick who nobody liked, the badass that knew how to escape from the zombies but nobody trusted, the smart guy who knew how to fix things, the dumb hot chick and the little pussy who did not really do much. They all get together and try to make a plan to escape to safety. Without giving away the whole movie there is some discoveries made by Alice and a little resolution at the end. Of course the movie left us with a little cliff hanger at the end and that is why I cannot wait for Resident Evil: Retribution. Milla Jovovich is already on board along with Ali Larter and my girl Sienna Guillory will be back to play Jill from Resident Evil: Apocalypse.
